Are we considered contractors? I’m not talking for tax purposes or anything like that. But more or less along the lines of a professional description.

To me, I don’t like that (contractor) general description any longer. In this neck of the woods, contractors on the home improvement side have gotten a lot of bad publicity because of a few bad apples. In reading some of the neighborhood community websites like Nextdoor, every so often someone post about a bad experience with a home improvement ‘contractor’. That bundles every small business relating to home improvement affairs of which carpet cleaning is thrown in the mix because of the word contractor. That concerns me. Maybe I’m over thinking this, but I don’t think that I am.

By my standards, I’m a pro at what I do. Excellence is the goal, even with chiselers (there’s more than one way to skin that cat). So I’m trying to come up with other descriptive wording to describe what I do for a living other than carpet cleaner, carpet cleaning, floor care business, carpet repair, glorified carpet scrubber. Does this make sense?

How would some of you describe yourself to a first time caller or potential client met in your everyday travels or your current client base?

I’m in the cleaning and flooring covering industry that specializes in hard and soft flooring cleaning and maintenance.. If you walk or lay on it, I gotchu..

Is a sub contractor a contractor? I think it’s all in presentation.. Any one who performs a service is considered a contractor..

I'm not licensed as a contractor, but I am licensed under the occupational tax as a service business.

Reminds me of when secretaries demand to be called Administrative assistants , custodians as Environmental Service Personal or stewardess’s need to be identified as flight attendants

We are maintenance contractors… why the insecure need to affix a fancier moniker?

No insecurity.
Just better marketing verbiage.

For myself, I really am a building service contractor. Janitorial is only one service I provide among many for commercial buildings. But I don’t advertise. You’re a carpet cleaner!

Is a contract used to provide the service?

Yes to a certain degree. When we first start a new location, we provide specification details, what is provided and what is additional in a contract. We don’t renew a contract after starting. When we do services for the general public, there’s not one.
