This is the tile in my home. I dont think its been cleaned proffessionally since 1956 when it was new.
This is what im down to after 4 cleanings. The mosaic in the bathroom is just as bad. Each cleaning gets its closer but no magic bullet yet.

Weve been getting the house ready for our wedding on January 1st. We are having the ceremony in our living room.

Cleaning this tile has taught me a little of what to watch out for when bidding tile. I have seen this particular tile quite a bit in this atea and now I know what its suppose to look like lol.

What's your tile cleaning process @steve_64 ?

I started out with flex citrus and the ten inch crb. I swithed to the buffer and a carbide brush and got better results.

Went back with viper renew and worked the grout lines more and ran the buffer again.

Still had the topical aroind the edges but each pass got better.

I finally used some stripper and stiffer brushes. Its drying now.

Mike lol it looked clear to me.


Genny has a better camera and glasses.

Stripper mixed strong, Malgrit brush under a 175 or this

and knee pads and go to town.

Mask everything off.

Rinse with a shop vac and lots of water

You might consider a small vapor steam unit for the edges and detail work. The heat can work magic in conjunction with Viper.

A steamer sounds like a great idea.

Ive got it down from three inches to about half an inch lol.

This has been a serious chore.

I still cant get it all off. I will have to remove the baseboards I think so I can scrub up to the wall. I shouldve jist done that from the beginning. I tore up the paint job my brother did this spring.

Talk about a learning experience! I know what to walk away from now or price it very high.

Where I could run the buffer cleaned up pretty good but these edges just dont want to clean up. Ive even used a stainless steel brush on it.

Just brutal.

I've seen a lot of that coated with lacquers/epoxies over the years.

Many homes built in western PA have this slate in them. You can find decades of every sort of "bad stuff" layered on them the first time you get called in to clean.

Just saw that mike. I see a lot of that tile around here too. And it all looks like mine use to.

It really looks nice cleaned up. We were thinking about covering it up but not after all this work. Ive been installing LVT in some other areas over the asbestos tiles.

Jasco paint & epoxy remover applied carefully with a dripless baster if its going to be a hack job, otherwise remove baseboards.

Strippers dry out sometime before they finish working in woodworking projects. A trick I learned is to apply stripper and cover with saran wrap sometime overnight. I can remove multiple layers this way. I have not tried it on a floor because of kids and owners. You will need adequate ventilation and close off rest of house. I think it would work and save some elbow grease.

A lot of time I'll take some quick clean on a towel and wipe down edges that's stuff is brutal don't drop it on anything. But if it's mop and glow I just say NO NO NO NO.

Im going to pull the baseboards and run the 175 again. Im not giving up on this.
I think it has lightened some over the last couple days. Some grout is looking better now.

Not all strippers are effective, especially on Mop & Glo, I would only use premuim products like Extreme Stripper from Betco or Bare Bones from NCL.

I bought a closed business last year and used a product I acquired in that purchase.

I may order something new but not sure what would actually be best for my issue.

After a couple weeks the dark edges have lightened and there are only a couple lines where its dark.
I need to pop the baseboards and give it one more good cleaning then seal it.
Found it interesting how much its lightened.

Yup...we see it all the time too.

Many times there is a wax coating on these types of floors. As soon as we spot that, we walk.

I typically pass on work or pictures as shown due to the material and the chemical as described (mopnglo) What a friggin nightmare...Barebones may help...Floor buffer with black pad or malish brush, and young knees...I've been cleaning tile and grout for over 16 years now and these topical issues are the most difficult to remove...Especially on rough pours material...What moron uses mopnglo anyway? At least thats what I say as I'm trying to remove it...LOL

I havent touched this floor since the last pic. Each day it got lighter and lighter.
Im going to pull the baseboards and clean it lightly and rinse it real well. Ill let it dry for a couple daus maybe to make sure its dry before sealing it.
