do you ever get concerned that one of your custys will be shopping on-line for scotch guard (to apply to shoes, or hats, or car interiors) and stumble onto a disty's site and discover just how much it really costs us at RTU application rates??:eekk:

We just did a house for a lady who bought a gallon Maxim carpet protector from God knows.... Asks us to apply it to her poly carpet..... We just add $30 to apply it for her to her living room and bedroom........ She thinks it helps keep the carpet cleaner as she lets her dogs come in the house and uses a kirby to clean the carpets when it gets dirty....:eekk:

We don't charge BIG bucks for protector, but this is just one of the reasons we use PC Fourgard instead

That risk exists.

There are times when we get orders for protector from our website that go to private individuals, and I assume was purchased to be put on after a cleaner left, or after their own cleaning with a rental machine, or one that they own.

I think that the people who hire a cleaner and are the type you want to keep as a customer would recognize the value in having a professional apply the product properly, using the tools and expertise to assure that the product works appropriately.

One way that cleaners add value to their protector application is when they offer a sensible and fairly inclusive warranty that offers to remove the spot if the customer can't, or a refund if the cleaner can't remove the spot himself.

As long as you aren't guaranteeing to replace the carpet or upholstery if the protector fails (you better get BIG BUCKS if you make THAT guarantee!), offering simply to refund the cost of the protector if it doesn't perform as promised is really a fairly low risk financially.

I went to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. They also put in an air filter. Later I went to Auto Zone and found out I could have purchased that air filter for for 1/4 of the price they charged to install it.

I don't think anyone at Jiffy Lube is loosing any sleep over that. Can a home-owner find a place to buy protector for less than 15 cents per sq. ft.? Sure, it happens. Should a carpet cleaner worry about it? I don't think so.

Note that in boith situations, the air filter and the carpet protector, installation was included in the "big bucks" price but the comparison was to product only.

The do it yourselfers are going to do all of it themselves....rent the machine and apply their own protection. Doubtful that you find someone who has a professional clean the carpet and then they apply protection themselves.

We don't worry about this at all. The demographic we serve won't even be protecting their own personal items themselves (likely have it done at the dry cleaner or at point of purchase). So they aren't going to buy the product online to even stumble across the distributor website, to do the math calculation to realize how much a gallon covers and costs vs. what we charge. These are busy professionals that outsource this kind of stuff so they can focus on their work and enjoy their leisure time.

Even if they do protect their personal items themselves, they aren't looking to do it on their own carpets.

If you are in the right target market, this wouldn't even be a worry or concern.

Jim what is the going rate for applying carpet protectant with and without the warranty?

That risk exists.

That's a question better answered by the cleaners here. Prices in Santa Cruz California are higher than Stinking Springs West Virginia because of cost of living, over head, etc.

Some cleaners won't sell it without the warranty, others sell the same product with or without at different prices, some use one for non warranty protection, the other with the warranty.

Get some feedback here first, then give me a call. I hesitate to recommend a specific price on a public forum with so many of the above variables in play.

How long does your "guarantee" go out? 6 months, a year...?

I've SEEN the effectiveness of Maxim Advanced. We are selling it a bit more lately. I'm tempted to sell it with a guarantee but not sure of terms.

This thread should be attached to it's twin brother about the clients realizing how much we make per hour.

To increase perceived value and reduce hourly for the calculating client: Isn't that why we carry a TV set and a DVD player at the back of the van?

Russ,

We offer Scotchgard with no guarantee, Maxim gets a LIMITED 1 year spot and spill. We use the certificate that comes with the Maxim (but we modified it a bit to have our company info on it). It spells out what is and isn't covered.

In the almost 10 years we've been offering this product, we've maybe gone on 1-2 spot clean call backs a year. Well worth offering this product. And we get almost double the cost for Maxim with the warranty, than we do for Scotchgard. Maxim sales last year, $14,790. Scotchgard $22,875. You an pay a tech's salary just in protection sales.....
