Does H2O2 have to be food grade?

I usually buy food grade 35% H2O2 and dilute it down to 12% to make stain magic. Does it have to be food grade? I notice the other kinds with chemical stabilizers are a lot cheaper. Also, I’ve read that pure 12% H2O2 works better than the 40 volume clear developer you can buy at hair care stores. Is this true?

no it doesn't have to be food grade

I doubt the addition of the phosphoric acid or other stabilizers found in clear developers inhibit their effectiveness ..but I'm no chemist

I'd question whether "better" is actually better since when it work it works....many times too well

food grade is generally 35% bulk, but diluted for cleaning food surfaces or ingesting when diluted way way down

tech grade has preservatives and therefore stays stable longer, tech generally 50% but my supplier just changed to 60%

I prefer a surfactant mixed in with my 12% and 6% peroxide for stain work

The nice part about that is with better clients you don't need to HWE.

You can pad them...and damn if you mf's aren't some lucky summa britches. Mike just happens to sell the GOAT of all pad machines.

So trade in those worthless TM's and stock up on pads and buy dedicated washer. Well unless you're going to wash your pads with the wives underwear.

Does your fire marshal know that you are using 35% H2O2? They would not be happy and an angry bureaucrat would be sure to make your life miserable. They would also not be happy with whoever sold you this 35% H2O2. There are strict rules on how and where you store it. We use 25% H2O2 in the plant and besides sodium hydroxide it is the second most dangerous raw material among the 1oo or so we use in formulating our 175 active formulas. 35% H2O2 is an accident waiting to happen. Saving a few bucks is not worth the risk as the Sally Beauty Supply version is at 12% (40% volume)with no reason to ever use more.
