I went to the parade yesterday

LOL!!!!! I love that animated picture!!!

When I was a band director, I had a neighboring town that we were begged to march in. Their own high school band wouldn't march in it. Over half the parade route was marching down a hill and there would be all kinds of the locals on top of the buildings or along the parade route, drinking early in the morning...and of course all saving their beer cans to toss at us as we came through. That was their form of entertainment. I even had kids running through the band trying to toss "snap pop explosives" in the tubas and firecrackers at my band students. I grabbed one kid as he was coming through the band and tossed him back to his parents on the street!(kid was about 14 years old).

One of my sophomore lead trumpet players came up to me and said" Mr. Saiger, I just got hit in the head with a half full beer can". He was also pointing to his eye which was going a bit sideways. I did not know at the time he had a lazy eye, so of course I was like "you've got to be kidding me"! Well....here comes the best part....that was the first time we went through the parade for the day. Mind you some how we got talked into going through the parade twice. March the kids down the hill....go around the block and march up hill, and then march down the route again. This just gave the locals time to "RELOAD" so we would get pelted again. My school administration thought this was a great idea marching this parade twice. Good exposure for them and our school! After that year of firecrackers, beer cans, obscene calls, I told the administration and parade organizers, we were done marching their parade! I was of course told I really should reconsider....um...NO! (KMA!) The second time through, I told my color guard girls (with flags and wooden rifles) if anyone gets in the way jumping in front of you or throws something at you, you have my permission to hit them with your equipment....even my permission to "accidently drop your equipment in their face"! (my kids never dropped equipment...they were very determined and very good!) There were 3 black eyes I know of from others in the parade route who deserved it!

The Next year....no band at all. Again, not even their school band (who happened to have new uniforms and new marching drumline because I got new uniforms and instruments for my program a couple years before this) This was also the year that "Caller ID" was coming to our area. I was the first person signed up in our area and couldn't wait so I could return a call to the "Threatening calls" I would receive for not being at certain functions everyone thought I should be at with my bands. It was ridiculous. Well, the band wasn't at the parade so I got calls....my Caller ID was awesome...and no one else had it. I returned calls to people who called leaving threating messages of my job and blah, blah, blah. You should have heard how the conversations went when they found out I knew who made the calls! Oh it was a great day!!!!

The next year, their High School band had to start marching in their parade. The parade is on Labor Day! I now go and drink and watch them march, and the band I once taught still DOES NOT march in that parade. It is a vacation for them!
