My best guess is someone was dead man stretching the carpet. Riccar. I have a local store that sells and services these. I rotate two and keep them fresh.

I must have missed the part of my post when I said how awesome that vacuum is. It’s just a vacuum. I’m supporting my local vac repair guy.

I was a kid when I first did that. I complained to my father after the job, and detailed the bad behavior of the installer and the resulting excrutiating pain:
