Recently, I had an unsettling experience that served as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with electric cigarettes. Just a few days ago, while engaging in the task of cleaning a customers sofa, I suddenly noticed what appeared to be smoke or steam emanating from the area along the side of the armrest.
My first instinct was to assume that I was dealing with a leak —perhaps a leak in a pipe.
However, as I squinted more closely, a sense of dread washed over me when I realized that the source of this alarming smoke was, in fact, an electric cigarette lighter that had been lodged down the side of the safa arm. To make the situation even more concerning, I could clearly see that the metal of the lighter was glowing red—it was dangerously overheating.
I immediately attempted to retrieve the electric cigarette lighter, but despite my best efforts, the size of my hands, combined with those of my colleagues, proved to be too cumbersome for the tight space between the cushions. In a panic, we scrambled around the kitchen, frantically searching for tools that might help in dislodging the lighter from its position.Eventually, we located a wooden spoon, which, as it turned out, fit down the side of the sofa with surprising ease. However, even with this newfound tool, we were still unable to extract the electric cigarette lighter.
The situation had escalated; the fear of the sofa catching fire was looming over us like a dark cloud. It felt like an eternity, but finally, after a great deal of effort and increasing desperation, we managed to hook the lighter and pull it out from its hiding place. The moment I held the lighter in my hand, I could feel the intense heat radiating from it, a sensation that prompted my instinct to immediately fling it into the sink. However, to my horror, the electric lighter exploded upon contact with the cold water—what I can only describe as akin to a firework going off in the confined space of the kitchen.
I couldn't shake the overwhelming feeling of relief that we had avoided a disaster. This close call served as a chilling reminder to me, especially since I do not personally smoke.
It seems plausible that the lighter began malfunctioning as we were attempting to clean the sofa with a detailing tool, we somehow turned it on, and the presence of water exacerbated the overheating issue.
As I reflect on this incident, I can't help but wonder if anyone else has encountered similar problems with these electric cigarette lighters.
It’s a reminder that, while they may seem innocuous, they can pose real dangers when used carelessly or when they malfunction. 5 mins later and we would have been gone from the house, no customer in the house and yes the house would probably went up in flames.
